House of Representatives Urges Restoration of Power in Yenagoa

The House of Representatives has issued a directive to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to expedite efforts in restoring power supply to Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.

This resolution stemmed from the adoption of a motion titled “Call to resuscitate the power transmission sub-station in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State,” brought forward by Obuku Oforji, representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, Bayelsa State.

During the plenary session on Wednesday, Oforji highlighted the dire situation resulting from the fire incident that engulfed the 132/33KV transmission sub-station serving Yenagoa on September 23, 2023. The incident plunged the city into darkness, compelling reliance on a single feeder to supply power to five feeders.

Expressing concern over the weakening operational feeder, Oforji emphasized the imminent risk of collapse if urgent measures are not taken.

Acknowledging the remedial efforts by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company to forestall the collapse of the operational feeder, the House, under the leadership of Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, called upon TCN to intervene promptly. The aim is to prevent a complete breakdown of power distribution and transmission in Yenagoa.

Additionally, the House mandated the Committee on Power to ensure compliance with the directive, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the need for swift action to alleviate the suffering of residents and businesses in Yenagoa.
