House of Representatives Moves to Establish Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages

The House of Representatives has initiated a legislative process to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other members, passed its first reading on Thursday.

The proposed university aims to promote the learning and development of Nigerian languages and cultures. According to Section II, Part I of the bill, the institution will offer all individuals, regardless of race, creed, or political belief, opportunities to acquire higher education in Nigerian languages.

In Section 14, the bill mandates the President to conduct a visitation to the university at least once every five years to oversee its operations. It also empowers the President to remove council members, excluding the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, for misconduct or inability to perform their duties.

The institution is designed to offer academic and professional programs leading to diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate qualifications, and higher degrees, focusing on the development of planning, adaptive, and productive skills within the field of Nigerian languages and cultures. The university will also engage in research, innovation, and postgraduate training to enhance the effective use of Nigeria’s natural, economic, and human resources.

Additionally, the university aims to collaborate with other national institutions for the advancement of Nigerian languages and cultures, emphasizing teaching, research, and outreach programs to foster a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s linguistic diversity.
