The House of Representatives has taken decisive action by mandating the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend the registration period for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by two weeks.
This resolution stems from the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Extend UTME Registration” during Thursday’s plenary in Abuja. Sponsored by Hassan Shinkafi, the motion highlighted the urgent need to address the economic constraints facing many families, which have hindered them from registering their wards for the UTME within the original timeline.
Shinkafi emphasized the adverse impact of the economic situation on families, stressing that without an extension, numerous candidates would be unable to register and participate in the UTME. He further underscored the importance of widening the coverage and participation in this year’s examination across Nigeria.
The motion also emphasized the potential benefits of an extension, particularly in encouraging parents of less privileged students to register their wards for the UTME, thereby promoting inclusivity and equal access to educational opportunities.
In response to these concerns, the House of Representatives urged JAMB to extend the UTME registration period by two weeks. Additionally, relevant committees on Education and Legislative Compliance were mandated to ensure strict compliance with this directive.
