Heavy Rain Disrupts Opening Day of Paris 2024 Olympics

Wet weather has significantly impacted the opening day of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, leading to several event postponements and delays.

Heavy rain that marred Friday’s opening ceremony in the French capital persisted into Saturday, affecting the men’s skateboard street event at Place de la Concorde. Originally scheduled for day one, the event has been rescheduled for Monday, with both the preliminary round and final postponed. The women’s event remains scheduled for Sunday.

At Roland Garros, no play was possible on the outside courts, resulting in the postponement of singles matches for Team GB’s Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, Dan Evans, and Katie Boulter.

Paris 2024 organizers maintain optimism that the triathlon events will proceed as planned on Tuesday, despite the heavy rainfall affecting the water quality of the Seine. A planned training session on Sunday is at risk of cancellation due to concerns about river cleanliness, with a decision expected at 04:00 local time (03:00 BST) on Sunday. Organizers anticipate that water quality will improve to acceptable levels within the next 24-36 hours.

In the women’s cycling time trial, slippery roads caused several riders to slide off their bikes, including the United States’ world champion Chloe Dygert, who finished third. Britain’s Anna Henderson secured second place, while Australia’s Grace Brown took gold.

Despite the initial disruptions, the forecast for the coming days predicts plenty of sunshine and warm weather.
