Harry Maguire Thanks Gareth Southgate for Support Amid Criticism

Harry Maguire, the Manchester United defender, has expressed gratitude to England manager Gareth Southgate for his unwavering support, acknowledging the criticism he faces amid fluctuations in form.

Despite experiencing challenges in securing a regular starting position at Manchester United this season, Maguire continues to be selected for the England squad, a testament to Southgate’s backing.

“I think I’ve been in every single squad I’ve been available for, I’ve played every competitive game that I’ve been available for,” Maguire stated, reflecting on his consistent inclusion in the national team. “It gives me great confidence.”

Addressing the criticism he receives, Maguire acknowledged the diverse opinions surrounding his inclusion in the squad. “There’s loads of people out there now who probably don’t think I should be in the squad,” he noted. “There’s millions of people that think I should be. That’s football and that’s why it’s such a great game because everyone has such a different opinion.”

In September 2023, Southgate fiercely defended Maguire against criticism following an own goal scored by the defender during a match against Scotland. Southgate labeled the treatment of Maguire as “a joke” and condemned the pundits and commentators responsible for the unwarranted scrutiny.

Maguire, set to earn his 63rd cap for England in the upcoming friendly against Brazil, emphasized the trust and faith shown by Southgate throughout his international career, highlighting the manager’s pivotal role in his development.

While Southgate’s future with the England national team remains uncertain, Maguire expressed his desire for the manager to continue in his role beyond the European Championships. He credited Southgate for the significant progress made by the England team since his appointment, emphasizing the manager’s influence on their success.
