Hardest Geezer Conquers Africa: Russ Cook Completes Epic 16,300km Run

Russ Cook, widely known as the “Hardest Geezer,” has achieved an extraordinary feat by completing his challenge to run the entire length of Africa. Over the course of 352 days, Cook traversed deserts, mountains, and rainforests, covering a distance of more than 16,300 kilometers across 16 countries, from the southern tip of South Africa to Tunisia’s Mediterranean coast.

The journey, initially planned to conclude by Christmas, presented Cook with numerous challenges, including life-threatening situations and unforgiving conditions. Despite facing robbery at gunpoint, illness, injury, and border delays, Cook remained determined to achieve his goal.

Cook embarked on his monumental challenge on April 22, 2023, setting off from the coastal village of L’Agulhas in South Africa. Over the following months, he navigated his way through Namibia, Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and several other countries along Africa’s west coast.

Throughout his journey, Cook encountered various obstacles, including a harrowing incident where he and his team were robbed at gunpoint. Despite the setbacks, he persevered, drawing strength from the support of those inspired by his mission.

Despite battling illness, injury, and challenging terrain, Cook remained resolute in his determination to reach his final destination. On April 22, 2024, after 352 days of relentless running, Cook completed his journey at Ras ben Sakka in Tunisia, marking a historic achievement.

Reflecting on his incredible feat, Cook expressed gratitude for the support he received and the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for his chosen charities. His remarkable endurance feat has inspired many and raised over £600,000, surpassing halfway towards his £1 million target.
