Gunmen Strike Iboko Community, Leaving Two Security Guards Dead

Panic gripped the Iboko community in Ebonyi State as gunmen launched a deadly attack on Tuesday, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least two security guards. The assailants, disguised as locals, perpetrated the violence after seemingly blending in with the community’s routine activities.

According to an anonymous eyewitness, the gunmen strategically positioned themselves in the area, even engaging in mundane activities like purchasing food items before unleashing chaos. A judiciary worker narrowly escaped the assailants’ wrath, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence.

The assailants’ first target was a popular filling station in Iboko, where they ruthlessly gunned down two individuals after refueling their vehicles. They then turned their weapons on Ebubeagu operatives, now known as Neighbourhood Vigilante members, resulting in the tragic deaths of Fredrick Idike and another individual. Additionally, two vigilante members were brutally attacked with an axe and later pronounced dead at the mortuary.

The heinous attack sent shockwaves through the community, prompting residents to flee for safety, with the Iboko Market deserted in the aftermath. The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident, acknowledging the loss of two lives while assuring ongoing investigations into the matter.

Ebonyi Police Public Relations Officer, Ukandu Joshua, stated, “Yes. It happened. Two lives were lost. But we are still investigating,” underscoring the gravity of the situation and the authorities’ commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
