Following a devastating fire incident at Dosunmu Market in Lagos Island on Tuesday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has taken decisive action by closing down the market. The fire, which engulfed no fewer than 14 buildings and caused the collapse of four structures, was reportedly sparked by the careless refuelling of a generator.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, during a visit to the site, expressed deep concern over the significant loss caused by the fire. He shared images from his visit on his Facebook page, reaffirming his commitment to assessing the damage and meeting with affected individuals. Emphasizing the need for stricter safety protocols, he announced the initiation of a full investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
In his statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the mandatory integrity test on standing structures within the market premises. Dosunmu Market will remain closed until the safety of all structures is ensured, and compliance with regulations is confirmed. The Governor emphasized that unapproved buildings will face demolition as part of efforts to prevent future incidents and enforce building codes.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Physical Planning will intensify its efforts to enforce building codes and prevent the misuse of residential properties, Governor Sanwo-Olu assured. He underscored the importance of prioritizing the safety of citizens and reiterated the government’s commitment to assisting those affected by the fire.
The devastating fire not only caused extensive damage to buildings but also led to the destruction of goods worth millions of naira. Starting in a three-story building on Jankara Street, the fire rapidly spread to adjoining buildings within the market.
