Governor Fubara Condemns Destruction of Ikwerre Council Secretariat, Calls for Political Responsibility

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has urged the people of Rivers State to approach political engagements with responsibility and refrain from acts of violence. His remarks came after visiting the Ikwerre Local Government Council Secretariat in Isiokpo, which was set ablaze by suspected political thugs loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The Governor, who had just returned from Akwa Ibom after paying a condolence visit to Governor Umo Eno, expressed dismay over the destruction of the Secretariat. He condemned the political violence, emphasizing that politics should not result in killings or the destruction of government properties built with taxpayers’ money.

“I feel very sad seeing what has just happened in this Council… This Council Secretariat was built by the immediate past chairman… This is supposed to be a legacy project,” said Fubara, lamenting the loss of a significant local government asset.

Governor Fubara also criticized the withdrawal of police officers by the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, which he claimed allowed “enemies of the state” to carry out the attack. He urged the people to act with responsibility, warning that funds intended for development would now have to be diverted to repair the damaged facilities.
