Governor Douye Diri Declines Potential Vice-Presidential Role in 2027

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has firmly stated his disinterest in becoming a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement released by Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, the governor addressed a suggestion from a group calling itself “Diri Angels” that proposed Diri as a potential vice-presidential candidate alongside Atiku. Alabrah clarified that the group met with Atiku, expressing hopes for his candidacy in the next election cycle.

Diri, however, dismissed the suggestion as a “Greek gift” from political opportunists, insisting it should be disregarded. He emphasized that the group’s intent was to sow discord and that their plot had failed. “I am not swayed by such calls. In my political journey, I have always relied on God and not on political jobbers with devious intentions,” Diri stated.

The governor, who began his second term on February 14, 2024, reiterated his commitment to serving the people of Bayelsa State and delivering the dividends of democracy. He urged the citizens not to be distracted by those seeking to create confusion for their own gains.

“I remain committed to the mandate given to me by the Bayelsa people and I’m single-mindedly focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to them. My administration will not be distracted by those who do not mean well for our state,” Diri declared.
