Governor Aiyedatiwa Launches ‘O’Datiwa Meters’ to Curb Electricity Billing Issues in Ondo State

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has introduced the “O’Datiwa Meters” program, aimed at addressing arbitrary and inflated electricity bills across Ondo State. The initiative aligns with the governor’s pledge to reform the power sector and make electricity more accessible to residents.

At the launch in Akure, Aiyedatiwa underscored the importance of accurate metering in ensuring a fair and transparent electricity billing system. The program seeks to subsidize meters, reducing energy theft and inefficient billing while ensuring that residents only pay for the electricity they consume.

The governor also highlighted the state’s recent takeover of electricity regulation from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (SERB), allowing for more tailored energy policies. Aiyedatiwa announced that Ondo State is gearing up for a significant investment in power generation, transmission, and distribution, urging companies in the sector to collaborate with the state.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Engr. Johnson Alabi, praised the initiative, calling it a transformative step for the energy sector. Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Rasaq Obe, and BEDC Managing Director, Deolu Ijose, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the program’s role in addressing inflated bills and promoting accurate energy use.

Beneficiaries like Mr. Olukayode Babatunde applauded the initiative, expressing hope that it would improve living standards and boost business growth in the state.
