Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith, widely known as Chef Smith, has been arrested for fabricating a Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.
Smith declared himself the new world record holder on social media during a press conference on Tuesday, claiming an astonishing 820-hour and 25-minute cooking session from February 1, 2024, to March 6, 2024. However, Guinness World Record’s Public Relations Executive, Alina Polianskaya, debunked his claims in an interview with the BBC. She stated, “No, this is not true at all. He does not hold the GWR title, and that is not our certificate.”
Polianskaya further clarified that the legitimate record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual is held by Irish chef Alan Fisher. Fisher achieved 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds of continuous cooking in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023.
Chef Smith’s fabricated claim significantly overshoots the verified record by over 700 hours, leading to his arrest and detention. Fisher’s record also surpassed that of previous holder, Nigerian chef Hilda Baci.
