Germany Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer Retires from International Football

Germany’s legendary goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, has officially retired from international football. The 38-year-old, who was a key figure in Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory, leaves the national team after earning 124 caps over a storied career.

Neuer’s final appearance for Germany came in their Euro 2024 quarter-final loss to Spain last month. He made his international debut in 2009 and played in eight major tournaments, solidifying his reputation as one of the game’s finest goalkeepers. Neuer was the starting goalkeeper in Germany’s World Cup final win over Argentina in 2014, a match that ended with Germany lifting the trophy in Brazil.

Named captain of the national team before the 2018 World Cup, Neuer held the role until this year when Ilkay Gundogan took over the captaincy. Neuer’s retirement follows Gundogan’s recent announcement of his own international retirement, and comes shortly after midfielder Toni Kroos decided to end his football career following Germany’s performance in their home Euros.

Despite stepping down from international duties, Neuer will continue to play at the club level with Bayern Munich. Last year, he signed a contract extension that keeps him with the Bundesliga champions until 2025.
