Former Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga’s late blunder gifted Paris St-Germain a victory over Champions League debutants Girona. The Spanish side had performed admirably throughout the match, frustrating PSG with a resolute defensive display.
In the 89th minute, Portuguese full-back Nuno Mendes drilled a low shot from a tight angle, and Gazzaniga, seemingly in control, allowed the ball to slip through his hands, sealing PSG’s 1-0 win.
Despite their dominance, PSG struggled to break down Girona, registering 26 shots without a goal from open play. France forward Ousmane Dembélé came closest, hitting the crossbar and losing a one-on-one battle with Girona’s defense.
Girona, debuting in the Champions League after a third-place finish in La Liga, showed defensive discipline but offered little threat going forward. PSG’s persistence eventually paid off thanks to Gazzaniga’s costly mistake.
