Fuel Price Hike: Governor Abiodun Warns Against Fare Exploitation

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has cautioned transporters against exploiting the public following the recent fuel price hike. In response to the increase, the governor announced that the state government would provide 100 brand-new 18-seater Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to ease the burden on transporters and commuters. The Federal Government will also supply 20 CNG-enabled buses and 500 conversion kits to the state.

At a meeting in Abeokuta with transport unions, Governor Abiodun stressed the need for fair pricing in transportation, noting that the increase in fuel prices should not lead to an excessive rise in fares. He remarked that while fuel prices rose by 30%, some transporters had hiked fares by over 1000%, an action he deemed unnecessary.

Abiodun also announced the formation of an enforcement committee to oversee transportation pricing, including law enforcement officials and representatives from key sectors. He highlighted the state’s role as a major conversion center for CNG vehicles in the Southwest, assuring that vehicle conversion to CNG will begin soon.

Transport union leaders, represented by Samsudeen Apelogun, President of ACOMORAN, pledged to ensure reasonable transport fares and praised the governor’s efforts in transforming the state’s transport sector.
