Fuel Hike: Motorists Stranded as Filling Stations Suspend Sales in Anambra

Motorists in Anambra State were left stranded on Tuesday as most filling stations shut down operations following reports that the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had issued a directive to increase the pump price of fuel from N617 to N897 per liter.

In the state capital, Awka, Rainoil was the only station selling fuel as of 5 p.m., while others had closed their doors, leading to a significant impact on transportation across the state.

As a result of the scarcity, commercial vehicle operators quickly hiked their fares, leaving many commuters with no choice but to walk part of their journeys to save money. The fare for routes that typically cost N200 had surged to N350, and the fare from Awka to Onitsha increased from N1000 to N1300.

Some filling stations that had fuel until the end of business on Monday reported running out of stock, with station owners and attendants left idle beside their pumps.

The situation has forced many commercial vehicle operators who couldn’t find fuel to park their vehicles at home or leave them in long queues at the few operating stations. This abrupt change has significantly disrupted daily life for both motorists and commuters in the state.
