Former Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), highlighted the pivotal role of political parties in ensuring good governance, asserting that the government belongs to the party. Fashola made these remarks during an interview with newsmen at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, on the sidelines of the 18th edition of the Lagos State Executive/Legislative parley.
Speaking under the theme “Engaging all for Inclusive Governance: Hands on for a Greater Lagos Rising,” Fashola emphasized the importance of such gatherings in fostering collaboration between the executive, legislative, and party leaders. He stressed that these interactions were crucial for bringing the party up to speed with government activities and promoting a unified approach to governance.
Fashola underscored the fact that politicians campaign on the manifesto of their respective parties, highlighting the need for alignment between government actions and party objectives. He described such gatherings as fact-checking exercises that ensure the party is aware of government activities and plans for the people.
Asserting that elected leaders cannot operate in isolation, Fashola emphasized the importance of team building and seamless communication for the development of democracy. He noted that such interactions help break down prejudices and barriers, fostering better executive/legislature relations.
Fashola urged the government to leverage all layers of society to reach the people and alleviate hardship, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in tackling societal challenges. He called on citizens to embrace the ethos of being their brother’s keeper beyond the month of Ramadan, advocating for a continuous culture of support and assistance to those in need.
