Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello’s Media Office Responds to EFCC Allegations

The media office of former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello has issued a robust response to allegations made against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), asserting that the court has yet to substantiate the accusations.

In a statement signed by the director of Bello’s media office, Ohiare Michael, the former governor’s camp refuted claims that he withdrew $720,000 from a government account to pay his children’s school fees in advance. The statement emphasized that Bello’s children attended the American International School, Abuja, before his tenure as governor, and fees were paid promptly and without fail.

The media office highlighted documents filed by Bello’s lawyers, which they assert demonstrate transparency regarding the payment of advance school fees for his children. These documents have been shared online in response to allegations and are awaiting judicial review in court.

The statement condemned what it described as “unending harassment and persecution,” citing Bello’s decision to seek enforcement of his fundamental human rights in response to ongoing scrutiny. It also urged caution, noting that legal proceedings are underway, and parties should refrain from actions that may prejudice the court’s judgment.

Furthermore, the media office addressed the recent actions of the EFCC, including an attempted arrest of Bello despite a court order restraining such actions. The statement emphasized Bello’s commitment to due process and adherence to the rule of law, asserting that he does not engage in “backdoor” dealings with law enforcement agencies.

In a related development, a Kogi High Court has ordered EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede to appear before it on May 13 to explain alleged disobedience of a court order. The court’s decision follows a contempt charge filed against Olukoyede by Bello, alleging unauthorized actions by EFCC operatives despite a court order.
