Andrew Emwanta, a former Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) citing dissatisfaction with the flawed governorship primaries held on Saturday.
The primaries, which resulted in three declared winners, were marred by controversy as different officials announced conflicting outcomes. While Governor Hope Uzodimma declared Dennis Idahosa as the winner, returning officer Stanley Ugboaja announced Monday Okpebholo as the victor. Additionally, Ojo Babatunde, representing the returning officers in all local government areas, declared Anamero Dekeri as the winner, further exacerbating the confusion.
In a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of Ward 7, Egor Local Government Area, and shared with journalists on Monday, Emwanta expressed his decision to resign from the APC effective immediately, citing the party’s lack of internal democracy and flawed electoral processes as his primary reasons.
Emwanta emphasized his loss of confidence in the party’s leadership structure and political ethos, stating that remaining with the APC would compromise his ability to support candidates based on his convictions and values. He underscored his desire to be an independent political player, free to support candidates of his choice without constraints imposed by party affiliations.
Asserting his constitutional right to freedom of association, Emwanta declared his intention to pursue an independent political path, aligning himself with candidates who resonate with his principles and beliefs. He requested the removal of his name from the party’s register at the ward level, signaling his definitive departure from the APC.
