Former Brazil international football player Robinho, known for his stints with AC Milan and Manchester City, has been arrested in his hometown of Santos to serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape. The arrest comes two years after he was convicted in Italy for his involvement in the gang rape of an Albanian woman at a nightclub in Milan in 2013.
Robinho, 40, was apprehended at his residence in Santos following a request from the Italian government to serve his sentence in Brazil after extradition attempts failed. The decision to uphold his detention was confirmed by a Supreme Court judge, rejecting a plea to halt his imprisonment. Additionally, a Brazilian court ruled that Robinho should serve his sentence behind bars rather than under house arrest.
The action taken by Brazil’s justice system has garnered praise from local media, with concerns previously raised that Robinho might evade justice due to his fame and wealth. Despite his claims that the sexual encounter was consensual, Robinho lost an appeal in 2020 and saw his sentence upheld by Italy’s highest court in 2022.
Robinho, who earned 100 caps for Brazil, was playing for AC Milan at the time of the incident.
