Flavour Reflects on His Transition from Producer to Singer, Credits Mr Raw for Pivotal Role

Nigerian Highlife artist Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, recently shared insights into his journey from music producer to renowned singer. Speaking on the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Flavour highlighted the significant role that rapper Mr Raw played in shaping his career.

Flavour, who started as an instrumentalist and later ventured into music production, recalled how he charged N5,000 per beat during his early days as a producer. He credited Mr Raw for encouraging him to transition into singing, which ultimately changed the course of his career.

“From learning studio productions, I became a producer. It was so easy because I was already an instrumentalist. From there, I started getting gigs as a producer. I used to charge N5,000 per beat,” Flavour shared.

He further explained how Mr Raw’s influence led him to explore his potential as a singer. “Some weekends, Mr Raw would ask me to be his backup singer at his shows. I left the bar where I was playing live music and started following Mr Raw. Everything changed when I saw people vibing to a chorus I did for one of Mr Raw’s songs.”

The experience was an eye-opener for Flavour, who realized that he could create his own music. “I told myself that if I can do the chorus, it means I can put a song together. I should start creating my own. Mr Raw was the guy that opened my eyes to what being an artist is,” he said.

Flavour, who gained widespread recognition across Africa and beyond with his hit song “Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix),” released his debut album ‘N’abania’ in 2005, marking the beginning of a successful music career.
