FG Urges MDAs to Intensify Anti-Corruption Efforts

The Federal Government has called on Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and bodies engaged in combating corruption to enhance their efforts and reinforce their commitment to eliminating corruption across the country. This directive was issued by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), on Friday during the Validation Meeting of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) Action Plan held in Abuja.

The Ministry of Justice organized the NACS validation meeting with support from the European Union/International IDEA, Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme. Fagbemi emphasized the necessity of revising the NACS Action Plan after extensive consultations to achieve more effective results.

“Following a series of consultations and collaboration among the 22 MDAs with anti-corruption and accountability mandates, it became essential to review the NACS Action Plan to ensure enhanced participation, effectiveness, and responsiveness,” Fagbemi stated.

He outlined the five pillars of the NACS Action Plan: prevention of corruption, public engagement, campaign for ethical re-orientation, enforcement and sanctions, and recovery and management of proceeds of crime.

Nigeria has adopted several international protocols and conventions to combat corruption, including the ECOWAS Protocol on the Fight Against Corruption, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

In her opening remarks, the Head of the Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-Corruption Reforms, Jane Onwumere, highlighted the importance of the action plan review, aiming to bring the strategy document to life to minimize corruption and enhance service delivery. She noted progress made from the action plan, citing critical legislation such as the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, among others.

The event saw attendance from key anti-corruption and accountability bodies, including the Auditor-General of the Federation, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Secretary of the Public Complaints Commission. Other notable attendees included the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), and the NBA President-elect, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN).
