FG Secures $2.2bn for Health Sector Overhaul

The Federal Government of Nigeria has mobilized $2.2 billion in external finance for the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII). President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Sector-wide Coordinating Office-Programme Management Unit (SCO-PMU) to ensure efficient, transparent, and accountable management of these external grants.

The SCO-PMU, reporting to a Steering Committee chaired by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, will serve as the secretariat and delivery unit for the NHSRII. Its functions include program management, monitoring and evaluation, and fiduciary management.

President Tinubu also approved the appointment of Dr. Muntaqa Sadiq as the National Coordinator of the SCO-PMU. Sadiq brings over 17 years of experience in public health and related sectors and is currently a doctoral candidate in public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The NHSRII, adopted by the National Council on Health in November 2023, aims to improve population health outcomes and enhance the country’s human capital by saving lives and minimizing both physical and financial pains.
