FG Reaffirms Commitment to Judicial Independence with New Judges’ Quarters in Abuja

The Federal Government has reinforced its pledge to safeguard the nation’s Judiciary from manipulation and inducement, unveiling a new initiative to improve judges’ living conditions. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), announced this during a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday for the construction of Judges’ Quarters in Abuja’s Katampe District.

The project will feature 40 residences for judges of various ranks and is set for completion within 15 months. Wike emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration prioritizes judicial independence, with improved living conditions being a key aspect. “Mr. President has always asked, how do we work for the independence of the Judiciary? One of the fundamental aspects of judicial independence is the tenure of judicial officers,” Wike stated, noting that the constitution has been amended to allow judicial officers to retire at age 70.

Wike highlighted the administration’s recent changes to judicial officers’ remuneration, which he said were aimed at enhancing the Judiciary’s independence. “The Minister of Justice and Attorney General recently stated that one of President Tinubu’s first actions was to amend the salaries and allowances of judicial officers in 2024, which he has just assented to,” Wike added.

The Minister further underscored the significance of housing in ensuring judicial autonomy, explaining, “By providing housing, we ensure that judges will have a home upon retirement, making it difficult for anyone to manipulate or interfere with them.” He pointed out that adequate compensation, stable housing, and guaranteed tenure are crucial for enabling judges to perform their duties with integrity.

Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, expressed gratitude to key government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, for supporting the initiative aimed at bolstering the Judiciary’s independence.
