Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool Football Club, have announced the appointment of Michael Edwards as the company’s Chief Executive of Football, marking a significant return for the former sporting director.
Edwards, renowned for his executive talents in the football industry, declined an initial approach by FSG but engaged in further discussions about his role in early March. His return to FSG comes with greater seniority and a broader remit, reflecting his ambitions and aligning with the club’s objectives.
In a statement, FSG President Mike Gordon praised Edwards as one of the most formidable talents in world football, highlighting his extensive experience and leadership qualities. Edwards will assume responsibilities previously held by Gordon, overseeing and managing Liverpool FC’s football operation.
Having joined Liverpool in 2011 and serving as sporting director from 2016 to 2022, Edwards played a pivotal role in the club’s success, facilitating key player acquisitions and contributing to major trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League titles.
In his new role, Edwards will spearhead a restructure of football operations at Liverpool, which includes the recruitment of a new sporting director. Richard Hughes, set to depart as Bournemouth technical director, is under consideration for the role, tasked with identifying and appointing a successor to current manager Jurgen Klopp.
Moreover, FSG’s offer to Edwards includes involvement in the acquisition and management of a second club, reflecting the group’s commitment to expanding its football portfolio. Edwards expressed his belief in the necessity of investment and growth to remain competitive, underscoring his dedication to driving success for both Liverpool and potential future ventures.
Prior to his return to FSG, Edwards worked as a consultant for Ludonautics, a sports advisory business, where he collaborated with industry experts on strategic initiatives. He will conclude his consultancy work on 1 June in preparation for his new role at Liverpool.
