Fenerbahce has been slapped with a fine of 115,000 euros (£98,450) and Galatasaray granted a 3-0 victory in the aftermath of protests during the Turkish Super Cup clash on Sunday.
In a pre-planned demonstration, Fenerbahce fielded their under-19 team and staged a walkout in the third minute of the match.
The club’s protests stemmed from their discontent with several factors surrounding the fixture, including their unsuccessful request for a postponement ahead of Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final tie against Olympiakos, which was denied by authorities.
Furthermore, Fenerbahce expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of a Turkish referee for the encounter, advocating for the involvement of a foreign official, a plea rejected by the Turkish federation.
Galatasaray swiftly capitalized on the situation, seizing the lead with a goal from Mauro Icardi within the opening minute in Sanliurfa, prompting Fenerbahce’s abrupt exit from the field before the game could resume.
In a statement, Fenerbahce emphasized that their decision to participate was driven by a commitment to “defend the truth,” rather than to secure a victory.
The club’s discontent with the Turkish Football Federation was further exacerbated by disciplinary actions taken against two players, who received one-match bans following an altercation with Trabzonspor supporters during a league encounter on March 17.
Despite contemplating withdrawal from the Turkish Super Lig, Fenerbahce ultimately opted against such a course of action following a vote among members.
