The Federal Government has issued a stern warning, declaring its intention to prosecute individuals found engaging apprentices under the age of 12. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment made this declaration during a roadshow sensitization rally held at the Kugbo Furniture market in Abuja, emphasizing that such actions would be deemed as child labor.
Represented by Mohammed Tolani, the Director of Skill Development and Certification, the minister emphasized that the government had initiated measures to enforce the minimum age requirement of 12 years for individuals participating in apprenticeship programs across Nigeria.
“This contravenes both United Nations and International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions and standards. The policy is clearly outlined in the Labour Law, Cap. 198, Sections 49–53 LFN,” she stated unequivocally.
The ministry has embarked on a comprehensive enforcement campaign and public awareness initiatives across the six geopolitical zones of the country to address this issue.
“In addition to enforcement, the ministry has commenced the issuance of Trade Test Certificate of Competence to deserving candidates, aimed at enhancing employment opportunities,” the minister further explained.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted that accreditation by the Department of Skills Development and Certification within the ministry is a prerequisite for individuals seeking to participate in the training scheme.
