Federal Government Appeals for Calm Amidst Planned Nationwide Protest

In response to growing public discontent and calls for a nationwide protest against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Federal Government has asked Nigerians for patience, promising to address issues as a “family matter” and to work towards the nation’s peace and stability.

Government’s Appeal and Position

Following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting convened by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the government views the situation as a domestic issue involving all Nigerians. Idris emphasized ongoing engagements with stakeholders and urged for calm, asserting that the government is committed to resolving concerns through dialogue and patience.

South-East Governors and NLC Response

The South-East Governors Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, has advised against the protests, citing concerns over the current tense atmosphere and potential for violence. Uzodimma argued that the timing is not appropriate and that the protests could exacerbate the nation’s fragile state.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has denied reports of withdrawing from the protest, clarifying that they are not the organizers but support dialogue between the government and protest leaders. The NLC has called on the government to address the economic hardships faced by Nigerians and to avoid using force.

Calls for Dialogue and Caution

Human rights activist Femi Falana urged the government to engage with protest leaders rather than resorting to threats. He emphasized that threats could backfire, potentially increasing support for the protests.

The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives also recommended dialogue with protesters to address their grievances while expressing concerns over the potential for protests to be hijacked by criminals, given the current insecurity in some parts of the country.

APC and Traditional Leaders’ Appeal

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) has called for an emergency meeting with state chairmen to discuss ways to prevent the protests. The APC urged confidence in the government’s efforts to address economic challenges and suggested that some issues raised by protesters are political or constitutional matters being addressed by the National Assembly.

Additionally, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has appealed to Nigerians to be patient and allow time for the government’s economic policies to take effect. He urged the postponement of the planned protests and called for continued efforts from the government to improve economic and security conditions.

The government, alongside various political and traditional leaders, is advocating for patience and dialogue as a means to resolve the current tensions and avoid further escalation.
