The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved ₦740 billion for the Berger stretch of the Abuja-Kano road, as part of several ongoing major infrastructure projects.
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, disclosed this after a cabinet meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He highlighted the government’s efforts to clear a significant backlog of infrastructure projects, including essential repairs and new constructions.
Umahi noted that the 162-kilometer Berger section of the Abuja-Kano road, previously slated for a tax credit funding arrangement, will now be funded directly by the government, with the approval already secured. Other critical projects include the rehabilitation of the Shagamu-Benin road, which will be reconstructed with reinforced concrete pavement, and the upcoming flag-off of the Sokoto section of the Sokoto-Badagry road.
Additionally, work will resume on the Oyo-Ogbomosho road, and significant repairs are planned for the Makurdi-Katsina-Ala road.
Umahi also addressed the inherited debt profile of ₦1.6 trillion tied to 2,604 projects, with a total contract value of ₦13 trillion. To tackle this, the Ministry of Works has adopted a phased project completion strategy based on available funding. FEC also approved advanced payment mechanisms to counter inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising petroleum prices.
