Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has issued a directive for settlers inhabiting the Abuja Science and Technology Village in Chika-Aleita along the airport road to vacate the area immediately or face demolition. This order came during an inspection tour of the village, accompanied by Uche Godfrey Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the situation, Minister Wike emphasized the necessity of swift action, instructing the Department of Development Control to oversee the removal of the settlers. He highlighted that compensations had been provided to the earlier settlers in the area and urged prompt fencing of the premises to facilitate the eviction process.
Furthermore, Minister Wike urged active possession of the village by the Ministry of Science and Technology to attract potential investors. He emphasized the need for tangible progress, denouncing the presence of an empty land despite existing infrastructure.
In response, Minister Nnaji underscored the grand vision for the technology village, comparable to renowned global tech hubs like London Technology City and Silicon Valley. Expressing disappointment with the current state of affairs, he emphasized the need to curb encroachment to facilitate planned development initiatives.
Established by the Federal Government in 1999, the Abuja technology village serves as a Free Trade Zone aimed at fostering innovation in science and technology.
In a separate engagement, Minister Wike discussed Abuja’s tourism potential with the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Nigeria, Ali bin Ghanem Al-Hajri. He expressed readiness to collaborate in developing tourism centers in Abuja, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance security and infrastructure in the capital city.
Ambassador Al-Hajri reciprocated Qatar’s willingness to collaborate, particularly in the fields of medical and education sectors, indicating potential avenues for bilateral cooperation.
