The father of Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min, Son Woong-jung, has been fined by a South Korean court for breaching child welfare laws at his football academy. Son Woong-jung, a former footballer known for his influential role in his son’s rise to Premier League stardom, was ordered to pay a fine of three million won ($2,220), according to reports.
The case arose after the parents of a young player at Son’s academy alleged that their child had been physically assaulted by Son Heung-yun, the brother of the Spurs player. The incident reportedly left the child with a large bruise on his left thigh. Additionally, Son Woong-jung was accused of verbally abusing the student and his teammates.
South Korean media, including Yonhap news agency, reported that Son Woong-jung, his son Son Heung-yun, and another individual were all fined three million won for their involvement in the incident. The court also mandated that the three complete 40 hours of child abuse education.
The Chuncheon District Court’s ruling came after prosecutors filed charges on August 30, calling for fines to be imposed on the defendants. Although Son Woong-jung has apologized for the incident, he defended the academy’s practices, stating that “the coaching staff at his academy never spoke or acted in a way that wasn’t rooted in love for the children.”
