In a thrilling FA Cup encounter, Championship leaders Leicester City secured their spot in the quarter-finals with a remarkable extra-time victory over Premier League outfit Bournemouth, courtesy of an exquisite goal by Abdul Fatawu.
The match remained deadlocked in a goalless stalemate during regular time, with both teams squandering numerous opportunities and striking the woodwork on several occasions.
As the first half of extra time drew to a close, Fatawu seized the moment, collecting the ball on the edge of the area before unleashing a sensational curling shot into the top right corner, just evading the fingertips of Bournemouth’s goalkeeper Mark Travers.
Fatawu’s superb strike proved to be the decisive moment of the game, propelling Enzo Maresca’s side into the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since their tournament victory in 2021.
The defeat extends Bournemouth’s winless streak to six games across all competitions, albeit they can now redirect their focus towards securing their Premier League survival, holding an eight-point cushion above the relegation zone under the guidance of Andoni Iraola.
The draw for the quarter-finals is set to take place at 19:00 GMT on Wednesday and will be available for streaming live on the BBC Sport website and app.
The encounter showcased both sides’ attacking prowess, with Bournemouth creating promising opportunities through the likes of Luis Sinisterra. However, Leicester’s resilience shone through, with Marc Albrighton’s effort hitting the post in the first half, followed by Wanya Marcal’s curling shot being tipped over by Travers.
