Tragedy struck North Bank, a suburb of Makurdi, Benue State, as a rival cult clash erupted, resulting in the reported death of at least seven individuals. The intensity of the clash forced the closure of the market in the vicinity.
According to eyewitnesses, the clash involved two rival groups, namely the Black Axe and Red Axe cults. The altercation allegedly began when one individual from one of the groups was harassed while accessing products in the market. Subsequently, a retaliatory attack ensued, escalating the conflict.
Despite the presence of military barracks in the vicinity, the cultists continued their violent activities unabated. This underscores concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in the area.
Nura Umah, a leader of a vigilance group in the area, confirmed that six cult members lost their lives in the clash, with additional casualties including a commercial motorcyclist who inadvertently became involved. Shockingly, one victim’s head was reportedly taken by the perpetrators.
Security personnel have since been deployed to the area to restore calm and investigate the incident. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, confirmed the deployment of officers and stated that investigations are ongoing.
