The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a stringent crackdown on extortion and illicit activities by touts at Nigerian airports. FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku made this declaration during a media briefing in Lagos on Saturday.
Addressing the Problem
Mrs. Kuku revealed that she had received numerous reports regarding the activities of touts who harass and extort unsuspecting passengers. Determined to put an end to these illegal practices, she emphasized her commitment to creating a seamless and pleasant experience for travelers.
Task Force and Leadership
To lead the fight against these crimes, FAAN has appointed Henry Agbebire, the Director of Special Duties, to head a dedicated committee. This task force is mandated to enforce discipline among airport staff and ensure a culture of professionalism at all levels.
Measures and Policies
– Collaboration with Government Agencies: Kuku promised to engage with all government agencies operating at the airports to ensure strict compliance with anti-touting and anti-extortion measures.
– Magistrate Courts at Airports: To expedite the prosecution of offenders, magistrate courts will be established at international airports.
– Identification and Accountability: All airport personnel will be required to prominently display their on-duty cards and name tags for easy identification.
– Passenger Feedback: Dedicated phone lines and QR codes will be set up to allow passengers to provide feedback on their airport experiences.
Recent Actions and Warnings
This initiative follows a recent warning issued by FAAN ahead of Eid-el-Kabir, cautioning against bribes and extortion at airports nationwide. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, assured travelers of a smooth journey and mentioned that security apparatuses have been upgraded to ensure the safety of lives and property.
