Enugu State to Launch CNG Buses, Establishes New Ministry for Energy and Mineral Resources

The Enugu State Government has announced plans to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to reduce transportation costs and promote environmental sustainability. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at transitioning from petrol to CNG, with the potential to cut fuel expenses by half, according to the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor.

In addition to launching the CNG buses, the government is working to build the necessary infrastructure to ensure smooth and safe operations. “The state is not only investing in buying CNG buses but also supporting private sector involvement in the transportation space,” Dr. Ozor said after a State Executive Council meeting over the weekend.

He further explained that the state is constructing a massive CNG mother station at Ugwu Onyeama, which will cater to the entire South East region, with additional daughter stations set to follow.

In a related development, the Enugu State Government has established the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to catalyze investment in the energy and mineral sectors. The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, highlighted the new ministry’s role in overseeing energy projects and solid mineral resources, noting its immediate effect following the Executive Council’s decision.

Prof. Onyia also referenced the earlier signing of the Enugu State Electricity Law, which requires setting up an independent regulatory body and further developing the state’s energy sector. The ministry will work to harness the state’s mineral resources and attract investment opportunities.

These initiatives are part of the government’s efforts to create a sustainable, affordable, and secure transportation system for its citizens, alongside fostering an enabling environment for energy and mineral sector development.
