Enugu State Monitoring Team Cracks Down on Absentee Council Workers

In response to reports of widespread absenteeism among civil servants in Enugu State, the Monitoring Team on Work Attendance and Productivity conducted an unscheduled visit to the Ezeagu Local Government headquarters at Aguobu-Owa on Friday. Led by the Head of Service, Mr. Kenneth Ugwu, the team aimed to address the issue of staff absenteeism and reinforce the importance of productivity in the state’s workforce.

The visit followed a viral video on social media depicting the deserted state of the local government headquarters on Friday, April 5, contrary to a recent directive requiring civil servants to work five days a week. Governor Peter Mbah’s administration initiated a staff audit of local government councils in response to concerns that many employees on the state’s payroll were not regularly reporting for duty.

During the visit to the Ezeagu council headquarters, only 36 out of over 200 council workers were present. Mr. Ugwu, accompanied by key officials including Mr. Ken Chukwuegbo, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Comrade Ben Asogwa, Chairman of the Enugu State Chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Comrade Ezekiel Omeh, Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, emphasized the need for accountability and adherence to work schedules.

Mr. Ugwu warned that acts of negligence and unauthorized absence from duty would be met with disciplinary action, reaffirming the governor’s commitment to promoting productivity within the state’s civil service. The Monitoring Team’s efforts underscore the government’s determination to address absenteeism and ensure optimal performance among public sector employees.
