England defender Lucy Bronze has signed a two-year contract with Women’s Super League champions Chelsea after leaving Barcelona. The 32-year-old, part of England’s Euro 2022-winning team, expressed excitement about joining Chelsea and returning to England.
“To know I’m a Chelsea player still feels a little bit surreal,” said Bronze. “I’m really excited to be back in England. My family are so excited as well to get to more of my games. I’m excited to be in London, to see what the capital holds and to be at a club that is renowned for winning so many trophies.”
Bronze’s signing is significant for Chelsea, given her impressive track record. She previously won three consecutive Women’s Champions League titles with Lyon and added two more with Barcelona, along with a domestic treble last season.
Chelsea assistant manager Camille Abily, who was part of the coaching staff when Bronze played at Lyon, praised the defender’s leadership and versatility.
“Lucy will bring leadership to the group. She is a serial winner and a versatile defender,” said Chelsea general manager Paul Green. “She has lots of experience and a winning mentality which we feel will fit well into the squad.”
Bronze is Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer, following Julia Bartel, Sandy Baltimore, and Oriane Jean-Francois. Her arrival is one of the most high-profile additions since Sonia Bompastor took over as manager from Emma Hayes.
