England has clinched a place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a game to spare, following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Albania on Monday. This result also sees the Netherlands and France advancing from Group D into the knockout rounds.
England will conclude their Group C campaign against Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday at 20:00 BST, but they are already assured of progressing. Gareth Southgate’s team has accumulated four points from a 1-0 win against Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark. Albania’s defeat guarantees that England will, at the very least, be among the four best third-placed teams.
A win against Slovenia will see England top Group C. They can also secure the top spot with a draw if Denmark fails to beat Serbia. If both England and Denmark win, the group winner will be decided by overall goal difference, then goals scored, and finally disciplinary points. England cannot finish lower than third in their group.
If Albania had managed to defeat Spain, England would have needed to wait until Tuesday to confirm their progression. However, the Spanish team, three-time European champions, proved too strong.
Potential Last 16 Opponents for England
If England wins their group, they will play a third-placed team from Group D, E, or F in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday at 17:00 BST. Austria currently sits third in Group D, while Group E sees Romania, Belgium, Slovakia, and Ukraine all tied on three points. The Czech Republic is third in Group F, ahead of Georgia on goal difference.
Finishing as group runners-up would pit England against hosts Germany in Dortmund on Saturday at 20:00 BST.
If England finishes third, they will face either Group F winners Portugal in Frankfurt on Monday, 1 July, at 20:00 BST, or the Group E winners in Munich on Tuesday, 2 July, at 17:00 BST.
