Indigenes of the Ejigbo community in Osun State have voiced their concerns over the poor condition of the Ejigbo/Iwo road and called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to initiate repairs. The issue was highlighted during the inaugural Ojude Oba Ejigbo event held at Gbamoge Square, Ejigbo, on Saturday.
Impact on Trade and Transportation
Mr. Tayo Adebowale, chairman of the event, emphasized that the road’s deteriorating state severely affects international business owners who use the route to access countries like Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Ghana. The deplorable condition has forced them to seek alternative routes, negatively impacting trade and transportation.
Adebowale urged Governor Adeleke to prioritize the road repairs, noting the community’s support for him in the last governorship election. He stressed the significance of the road for the community, particularly for traders and farmers who rely on it for transporting goods.
“Our people are based in Ivory Coast. Trading is our mainstay, especially foreign trading. So, good road network is very important to us. We have daily departure and arrival to and from Abidjan every day. But Ejigbo/Owo Road has been abandoned for close to 20 years. Even transporters can no longer ply the road,” he said.
Adebowale further mentioned that the road’s condition has led to vehicles frequently breaking down, making it difficult for farmers to bring produce to the market and for travelers to reach their destinations.
Government Response
Representing the Osun State Governor, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism Abiodun Ojo assured the Ejigbo community of the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the area.
Community Initiatives
Mr. Olaide Raji, chairman of the maiden Ojude Oba Ejigbo planning committee, explained that the event aimed to foster unity among the indigenes and support efforts to elevate the town’s status within the state. He also appealed to Governor Adeleke to heed the community’s calls for road rehabilitation.
