Edo Youths Stuck in Unemployment Crisis, Says Akpata

Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, has expressed concern over the ongoing unemployment crisis among youths in Edo State, describing it as a “cycle of despair.” In a statement on Sunday, Akpata criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for failing to deliver on his campaign promises, leaving many young people and other vulnerable groups struggling.

Akpata highlighted the contrast between the state’s leadership claims and the reality on the ground. “The current administration celebrates our 33rd anniversary with pomp and pageantry, brandishing statistics of its supposed achievements,” he said. “Yet, as I have traversed the length and breadth of our state… I have witnessed a stark disconnect between these lofty claims and the harsh realities on the ground.”

He went further to accuse the administration of engaging in deceptive politics, stating, “The past eight years have been a masterclass in the politics of deception — a government that changed parties but maintained the same disregard for the welfare of its citizens.”

Akpata also spoke about the disillusionment faced by various groups in the state, noting that the elderly, farmers, and youths have all been severely affected by the state’s inadequate governance. “Our youths, once brimming with hope and vigour, now find themselves trapped in a cycle of unemployment and despair,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Akpata said he sees a glimmer of hope, inspired by the resilience of Edo’s people, especially young innovators. He also called on citizens to seize the opportunity presented by the upcoming September 21 governorship election to push for a transformative change.

“The stories of everyday courage and perseverance remind us of the true spirit of Edo State — a spirit that no amount of misgovernance can extinguish,” Akpata added.

He urged voters to break from the past and embark on a “journey of genuine transformation,” stating that the election is not merely a political contest but “a battle for the soul of Edo State.”

Akpata pledged to focus on creating a state where innovation and small businesses thrive, promising to leverage the state’s resources for sustainable development if elected.
