The Edo State Government has issued a strong condemnation of the violent attack on the Labour Party’s governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, at the University of Benin by students of the institution on Friday.
In a statement released by the state Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, on Saturday, the government expressed outrage at the violence associated with Akpata’s visit to the university. Nehikhare emphasized that an active investigation is underway to address the conflicting claims made by Akpata and the Student Union Government of the university.
The government unequivocally stated its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state, emphasizing that it will not tolerate any form of violence or irresponsible behavior. Nehikhare stressed that the government will ensure that anyone found culpable, regardless of their status, will face the full consequences of the law.
Furthermore, the government urged the people of Edo State to continue with their lawful activities as relevant agencies carry out investigations into the matter.
Akpata had earlier accused a senior government official of the state government of orchestrating the attack during an interactive session organized by the University of Benin Staff Club.
