Edo APC Campaign Council Alleges Plot to Incite Mass Protests by Governor Obaseki

The Edo State Governorship APC Campaign Council has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of planning to incite mass protests across the state, beginning September 15, 2024. According to a statement by the council’s Director of Media, Prince Kassim Afegbua, the alleged scheme is aimed at creating widespread unrest in Edo State, with similar actions being coordinated in other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) states to spark a national crisis.

The statement claimed that Governor Obaseki outlined this plan during a meeting at the Edo State Government House in Benin City on September 8, 2024. The meeting allegedly involved individuals connected to the death of Inspector Akor Onu, who, according to the APC Campaign Council, have not yet surrendered to the police. Afegbua further alleged that an Assistant Commissioner of Police, in collaboration with Obaseki’s Chief Security Officer, was protecting these individuals from law enforcement.

The council also raised concerns about the arrest of seven APC members and three PDP members in Inikorogha. It claimed that while the PDP members were released promptly, the APC members were detained until their legal team secured their release.

Additionally, the statement accused Governor Obaseki of urging PDP-controlled states to delay school resumption as part of a coordinated protest against the APC-led Federal Government. In response, the APC Campaign Council called on security agencies, particularly the Inspector General of Police, to act swiftly to prevent any disruption of peace as the state prepares for the upcoming governorship election.

As of the time of this report, Edo State’s Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, had not responded to the allegations.
