Dina Asher-Smith, Britain’s fastest woman, is embracing a “new era” in her career following her 100m disappointment at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite failing to reach the 100m final, the 28-year-old bounced back to come within two-hundredths of a second of a medal in the 200m and helped Team GB secure silver in the 4x100m relay.
This year has seen Asher-Smith undergo significant changes, including moving her training base to the United States and changing coaches after a 19-year partnership with John Blackie. Now under the guidance of Edrick Floreal in Austin, Texas, she is part of a world-class training group alongside Julien Alfred, the Olympic 100m champion from St Lucia, and Rhasidat Adeleke, a rising star from Ireland.
Reflecting on her Paris experience, Asher-Smith acknowledged her disappointment in the 100m, which she attributed to mistakes in her race preparation that caused her to run with “too much tension.” However, she quickly refocused for the 200m and managed to finish the season strongly, clocking a season-best 10.88 seconds to win at the Diamond League in Lausanne and finishing second in Brussels.
Asher-Smith, a three-time Olympic relay medallist and 2019 world 200m champion, views 2024 as a foundation year for what she can achieve in the future. She feels energized by the changes in her training environment and believes there is more to accomplish in the sport.
Looking ahead to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, she is confident of adding to her impressive tally of nine global medals, stating that she has re-evaluated her potential and is capable of achieving “more than [she] thought was possible.”
