Renowned Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, expresses his excitement about the possibility of winning the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards tonight. His track ‘Unavailable,’ featuring Musa Keys, is among the nominees in this groundbreaking category.
In an interview with Billboard at the Pre-Grammy show, Davido shared his enthusiasm, stating that winning the Best African Music Performance category would lead to a wild celebration. “I am just happy that we all get to shine. What if there was no [African] category? So, at the end of the day, we should all be happy that we have this category, something to call our own. Whoever wins, it’s okay. If I win, we are celebrating. We go crazy,” he expressed.
‘Unavailable’ faces tough competition from Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ and South Africa’s Tyla’s ‘Water’ for the coveted gramophone.
Beyond the Best African Music Performance category, Davido is also nominated in two other significant categories: ‘Timeless’ for Best Global Music Album and ‘Feel’ for Best Global Music Performance. The DMW boss is set to contend with fellow Nigerian artist Burna Boy in various categories, showcasing the global recognition of Nigerian talent on the Grammy stage.
The Grammy Award Premiere Ceremony, where the fate of these nominations will be revealed, is scheduled to take place tonight at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, promising a night of celebration for African music on the global stage.
