David Raya produced a stunning double save from a penalty to help Arsenal secure a 0-0 draw against Atalanta in their Champions League opener. The Spanish goalkeeper denied Mateo Retegui’s spot-kick and miraculously saved the follow-up header, preserving a hard-earned point for the Gunners in Bergamo.
The game’s pivotal moment came when Thomas Partey clipped Ederson inside the box, resulting in a penalty after a lengthy VAR check. Raya, following advice from Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, dived low to his right to save Retegui’s penalty and then scrambled across the goal to block the striker’s rebound header, which seemed destined for the back of the net.
Both teams struggled to create clear chances, with Arsenal only managing two shots on target, a double save by Atalanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi from Bukayo Saka’s free-kick and Thomas Partey’s follow-up. Similarly, Raya’s heroics were the standout moment in an otherwise quiet game.
