Commuters Decry Surge in Transport Fares Along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Commuters traversing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway corridor are expressing frustration over the sudden spike in transport fares imposed by commercial drivers operating in areas such as Berger, Arepo, Magboro, Mowe, Ibafo, among others.

A survey conducted by PUNCH Metro revealed that fares charged by drivers at the Ikeja under Bridge Park are significantly higher compared to those of other yellow buses operating outside the park.

Bimbo Ademola, a commuter, voiced her discontent, revealing that she often resorts to trekking long distances to reduce transport expenses due to the exorbitant fares. She lamented feeling financially burdened by the frequent fare hikes, emphasizing the need for more affordable transportation options.

Echoing similar sentiments, Adesewa Adesulu bemoaned the escalating transport costs and called on the government to intervene and alleviate the hardships faced by the public. She attributed the worsening economic conditions to the removal of fuel subsidy, urging President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action to improve the situation.

In response, driver Babatunde Hakeem acknowledged the challenges faced by commuters but attributed the high fares to directives from road transport union workers. He explained that fare prices vary depending on the time of day and passenger demand, with higher rates during peak hours and weekends.

Similarly, another driver known as Bade highlighted the influence of union workers in dictating fare prices, particularly at designated parks where passengers are readily available. Despite acknowledging the hardships faced by both commuters and drivers, he emphasized the necessity of turning a profit to sustain their livelihoods.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola, proved futile as calls and messages remained unanswered at the time of reporting.
