The Defence Headquarters has reported that 15 military personnel, including two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers, lost their lives during a communal clash in Delta State. The tragic incident occurred while the troops were responding to a distress call amidst a clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State.
According to Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the troops, on a peace mission to Okuoma community in Bomadi Local Government Area, were ambushed and killed by community youths. Even the commanding officer leading the reinforcement team fell victim to the attack.
Gen. Gusau stated, “The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities.”
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has ordered an immediate probe into the matter, and the state government has been notified. Additionally, some suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
This recent clash adds to the history of tensions between the Okuama and Okoloba communities. In January 2024, six individuals were killed, and many others sustained injuries in a shootout stemming from a land dispute between the two communities. Similar conflicts have been recorded in previous years, highlighting the longstanding grievances and challenges faced by these communities.
