Coco Gauff Parts Ways with Coach Brad Gilbert After US Open Exit

American tennis star Coco Gauff has ended her partnership with coach Brad Gilbert just two weeks after her fourth-round loss to fellow American Emma Navarro in what she described as a “disappointing” US Open title defense. Gauff, 20, had worked with Gilbert for over a year, during which she claimed her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open.

Gilbert, known for coaching tennis legends such as Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick, shared his thoughts on the split via social media, stating, “Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead.” He added that he was “excited for the next chapter” in his coaching career.

Gauff initially brought Gilbert on board alongside Spanish coach Pere Riba after a disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon last year. This move sparked a remarkable turnaround, with Gauff winning 18 of her next 19 matches, including titles in Washington, Cincinnati, and her career-best triumph at the US Open. Following Riba’s departure in November, Gilbert became Gauff’s main coach.

Despite a strong start to the year, Gauff’s recent form has been less consistent. After early exits in both Wimbledon and the US Open, questions arose about her serve and forehand performance. Gauff struggled notably against Navarro, hitting 19 double faults, which further fueled speculation about her coaching setup.

Gilbert thanked Gauff and her team for “an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023” and the 14 months of their collaboration, as both now move on to new chapters in their respective careers.
