The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has issued a stern warning to judicial officers across the country, cautioning against engaging in unethical behavior that could tarnish the image of the judiciary.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of a Hybrid Refresher Course for judicial officers of the Superior Courts of record, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the imperative for judges to uphold the rule of law and remain steadfast in their adjudicatory duties.
While acknowledging the necessity for each arm of government to maintain independence, the CJN lamented the frequent and blatant disregard for both the Constitution and court judgments. He underscored the importance of fostering a harmonious relationship among the branches of government to ensure efficient and effective justice delivery for citizens.
Justice Ariwoola voiced concern over the growing trend of discussing and possibly prejudicing ongoing court cases through media platforms, urging judicial officers to refrain from such practices. He urged them to stay focused and resolute in upholding their responsibilities.
The CJN highlighted the paramountcy of adherence to the Constitution, emphasizing that all citizens, irrespective of their positions, have a duty to uphold and defend its provisions. He urged a reevaluation of attitudes towards obeying court orders and respecting the rule of law, stressing the need to prioritize justice and fairness.
In emphasizing the significance of the Refresher Course, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the importance of incorporating best practices to expedite justice delivery and bolster public confidence in the judiciary. He urged participants to engage in discussions aimed at addressing delays in dispensing justice.
Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Salisu Garba, echoed the CJN’s sentiments, stating that the course aimed to enhance judicial officers’ understanding of practical aspects of their functions. He noted that the theme, “Reaffirming Judicial Commitments to Justice Delivery and Modernizing Judicial Practices and Procedures,” sought to equip judges with the tools necessary to enhance their performance on the bench.
