Substitute Christopher Nkunku’s late goal secured a hard-fought 1-0 win for Chelsea against Bournemouth in a heated match that saw a Premier League record 14 yellow cards. Despite Bournemouth’s dominance and a missed penalty by their record signing, Evanilson, Chelsea snatched the win when Nkunku calmly finished a through-ball from debutant Jadon Sancho.
Bournemouth, who had most of the chances, were left frustrated as Marcus Tavernier and Ryan Christie both hit the woodwork. The Cherries’ aggressive play earned six yellow cards, while Chelsea picked up eight, breaking the previous record for the most cards in a Premier League game.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was unfazed by the number of bookings, stating, “It is what it is.” The win moved Chelsea up to seventh in the table, while Bournemouth sit in 11th. Despite their solid display, Bournemouth’s wastefulness in front of goal ultimately cost them.
Nkunku’s decisive goal came late after a game in which Chelsea struggled to build up play and frequently lost possession. Sancho’s introduction at halftime added creativity, with his footwork leading to the assist for Nkunku’s winner.
